What is AI SEO? And why it matters for Malaysian businesses

More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overview for answers instead of scrolling blue links. AI SEO is the work of making sure your business is clear enough to be found — and cited — in those answers.

AI SEO: being found in the answers, not just the links

Classic SEO asks “will my page rank?”. AI SEO asks a slightly different question: “will an AI answer engine pick my business as the source?”

Search is changing. Instead of typing a query and choosing from ten blue links, people increasingly ask a chatbot a question and read one assembled answer. For a Malaysian SME, that change is a quiet but real shift in how customers find you — and it rewards a specific kind of website.

SEO vs. AI SEO

SEO is the full practice of improving organic visibility on search engines: technical fixes, on-page content, local signals and measurable reporting. AI SEO is the part of that practice focused on answer engines — making your content clear and structured enough that AI systems can understand and cite it. The two overlap. Good AI SEO does not replace classic SEO; it extends it with attention to how machines summarise.

You will also hear the terms GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). They describe the same goal from slightly different angles: being visible inside AI-generated answers. At Dozzo we treat them as one practice: AI SEO.

Where AI answers come from

When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini “best digital marketing agency in Klang Valley”, the model does not invent the answer from nothing. It draws on sources it can read — and it cites them. The same happens with Google’s AI Overview, which appears above the classic search results for many queries. The practical consequence: if your website is clear, well structured and easy for machines to parse, you give answer engines a reason to name you. If it is vague or buried, they will name a competitor.

The surfaces that matter to Malaysian businesses today include ChatGPT / OpenAI search, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, Bing, Perplexity and increasingly Apple and Meta’s assistant features. They all read the public web — and your robots.txt decides whether they are allowed to.

The two layers of AI SEO work

AI SEO is not one trick. It splits into two connected layers:

Layer 1 — AI-assisted SEO

Using AI tools to make the research and content work faster: keyword clustering, topic mapping, competitor scans and drafting. AI is a productivity tool here. A human still sets priorities, checks facts and approves what goes live. AI-written content dumped on a site without human review is the fastest way to make your pages worse, not better.

Layer 2 — AI-search visibility

Structuring your website so answer engines can understand and summarise it: clear direct answers, named entities (who you are, where you are, what you do), FAQ structure, consistent business information, and clean technical foundations. This is the layer most Malaysian sites have never touched.

How to make your business easier to cite

None of this is guaranteed — but these are the concrete, repeatable things that measurably improve your chances:

  1. Answer real questions directly. Write a clear sentence that answers the question near the top of the page, in plain language, before adding context. AI engines favour explicit answers over vague marketing prose.
  2. State your entity clearly. Name your business, your location, your services and your service area in consistent, exact terms across your site, your Google Business Profile and your listings.
  3. Use headings and FAQ structure. H2/H3 headings that mirror how people ask, plus a visible FAQ, give AI engines discrete chunks they can extract and cite.
  4. Keep your robots.txt open to AI crawlers. Allowing GPTBot, Google-Extended, ClaudeBot and similar agents means answer engines can actually read your pages. (Dozzo explicitly allows them on its own site.)
  5. Stay accurate and current. AI engines weight trustworthy, up-to-date sources. Outdated prices, dead pages and inconsistent phone numbers all count against you.
  6. Keep the technical base clean. Fast, crawlable, indexable pages help both Google and AI engines. AI SEO is no excuse to skip classic technical SEO.

What you cannot control

Be honest about the limits. No agency — including Dozzo — can guarantee that ChatGPT names you, that you appear in an AI Overview, or that you hold a specific AI ranking. Answer engines choose sources on their own criteria, and those criteria change. What you can control is whether your website is structured to be an obvious, trustworthy candidate. That is the whole of the work, and it is worth doing regardless of any single AI product.

AI SEO alongside everything else

For most Malaysian businesses, AI SEO works best as one layer of a broader foundation: classic SEO for rankings, a Google Business Profile for local and Maps visibility, and a fast, mobile-first website. They reinforce each other. A site that is clear for Google is usually clearer for ChatGPT too. Dozzo runs SEO and AI SEO as one practice, so you do not have to choose between rankings and AI visibility.
